Keeping your house warm enough in the cold weather is expensive and you may be surprised with a high utility bill at the end of the month. But it does not mean that you keep on paying more than you should. There are some changes that you can make that will give you a warm home and save you money as well.

These changes do not have to be big projects like adding attic insulation. There are many easy-to-use energy-efficient techniques that are inexpensive.

Here are some ways you can keep the house warmer this winter.

Install a Thermostat

Consider buying a programmable thermostat for your home. It allows you to set up temperatures for different times of the day beforehand. You don’t have to keep the temperature at 68 degrees around the clock.

It saves you money since you are not always using it at higher temperatures. Choose a setting on the low end when you are away or sleeping.

Move Furniture Away From the Radiator

In summer, you may have changed the position of the furniture and it stays this way during the winter. Check if any couch, bed, or other furniture piece is blocking the flow of heat to the room. It will lead to loss of heat and more heating time.

With a forced air system, if the vent is blocked it can cause a pressure imbalance that disrupts the heat flow in the whole system.

Adjust the Water Heater

Since you will use more of your water heater more during the winter, you need to adjust the temperature. If it is broken then it’s just wasting energy and you need to get water heater repair services.

It is best to lower the water heater temperature to 120 degrees. To save more money on utility bills, consider showers and avoid long baths. Get new shower heads with low flow function. It reduces the consumption of water.

Seal Windows

Install clear plastic film across the inside of your windows. It will help trap the warm air inside and act as an insulator. Make sure to measure the windows before you buy the plastic film. They work best with wood, aluminum, and vinyl-clad molding.

Even though it might be expensive, it can keep the heat inside that is normally lost through the windows. It can help reduce your overall heating bill.

Put up Drapes

During the winter, you can put thick drapes that help keep the heat inside the room. Keep them open during the day to let sunlight in and close them at night just before sunset.

Besides the added comfort, insulating curtains act as a great energy-efficient item. You can match the curtain design and color according to the theme of the room.

Check the Chimney

The chimney acts like an open window so make sure it is closed when the fireplace is not in use. Check the seal and see if it is as tight as possible.

Another great tip is to make sure that the wood you use for your heating appliance is well-seasoned.
